Good Intent

A pub in Margate.

The Good Intent is a traditional terraced town house, set among the chimney pots of Cliftonville in Margate, just off Northdown Road.

Built from two cottages and once a coaching inn, the pub is named after an old sailing ship of the 19th century but when American air force personnel made it their regular watering hole in the 1950s, it quickly became nicknamed the GI.

These days the pub is the regular meeting place for two local residents’ groups and supports its own quiz team. Other games available include darts and pool and there are regular karaoke nights as well.

Found just off the main Northdown Road shopping area, it is also only a few steps from the mysterious grade-one listed Shell Grotto tourist attraction, discovered by chance in the early Victorian era but thought to be many centuries old.
