The Royal Oak is a fine town tavern; grade two listed, sitting in the heart of Wrexham within the old quarter amidst the banks and grand buildings which made this lovely town the commercial heart of North Wales. Many of these buildings are now occupied by the big pub brands and whilst the Oak, originally a Bents Brewery pub, has also been on the merry go round of pub companies, it’s now safely within the Joule’s fold. It is once again an independent brewery pub and sits snugly between the important looking buildings, on the old High Street of this impressive town, a very smart, but old fashioned style of pub.
The Oak is a long, long pub but just 4 and a half yards wide. It’s cosy with a real fire and a warm welcome and naturally it specialises in Joule's real ale. We have restored the pub, re-introduced panelling, and our team have calculated that this pub has the most mitres on the estate (ie each panelled corner) despite being the smallest pub. It also has the most mirrors – beautiful etched Joule’s livery. We were naturally delighted when the design of the Royal Oak was nationally recognised by English Heritage and CamRA 2010 [Highly Commeded], the second time Joule's has won the prize, neighbouring Joule's Brewery Tap the White Horse in Overton was our other winner. The judges praised the restoration of the pub, the careful sympathetic treatment of a grade II listed building and 'the ambition, clearly evident revealing the tremendous pride of a local brewer'.
It also has a small outdoor areas to the front and rear for drinking, chatting and smoking, and there is easy parking in one of the towns central car parks
