Situated in the little hamlet of Hafod Ddreiniog, The Brynffynon is a traditional family run hotel in the tiny village of Llanwonno. Built in the 17th century as a small workmen's public house, its present owners whom purchased the Brynffynon in January of 2008 have endured to keep the rustic, traditional appearance whilst modernising key facilities to provide a warm, welcoming environment.
Described as - "Nestling in the lea of bleak, wind-swept Cefn Gwyngul between the Rhondda Fach and the Cynon Valley, the parish church of Llanwynno looks out upon the surrounding hills as if it were the apparent last outpost of civilisation, though the public house which stands no more than a score of yards away might claim this distinction for itself with equal vigour and possibly with more support".
Despite its isolated situation, Llanwonno possesses an interesting past. The Church of St Gwynno was at one time the centre of one of the most important parishes in Glamorgan and is probably better known for the resting place of legendry Welsh runner Guto Nyth Bran - real name Gruffydd Morgan.
His legendary status as the fastest man of his time has led to the Nos Galan Races, which commemorate the Welsh runner and his athletic prowess. Held annually on New Year’s Eve in Mountain Ash, the Races follow a 5km route around the town and are traditionally started by a 'mystery runner'. Celebrities such as Linford Chrisite, Jamie Baulch and Neil Jenkins have appeared and all return to the Brynffynon for a well earned drink.
