The Ribs of Beef

A child and dog friendly pub serving food with Sky TV and WiFi and a garden in Norwich.

The original 14th Century building was destroyed in the great fire of Norwich in 1507 and only a few original walls remain. After the fire the property was rebuilt and various mercers and grocers owned the premises all with their own brewing utensils and in 1743 it was recorded that Thomas and Mary Holland were running it as an ale house called the Ribs of Beef.
It brewed its own ale until it was bought in 1818 by the Youngs and Crawshay brewery in King Street. In 1898 the road was widened to allow the electric tramway tracks to be laid and the front half of the building was demolished and it reopened in 1904.
The pub was renamed the Fye Bridge Tavern in 1929 in anticipation of the new twin span bridge built to alleviate the River Wensum flooding the city as it had in 1912. In 1958 Bullards brewery took over Youngs and Crawshay and delicensed the pub.
It was then used as an antique shop, an electrical shop and a ladies fashion boutique before Roger and Anthea Cawdron re licensed it in 1985 as the Ribs of Beef.
Most real ale pubs at the time had floorboards and benches but the thick carpet and leather seats appealed to the locals and professional clientele who required more comfort. Serving a range of cask ales from all over the UK and excellent food and wines it quickly established itself as 'the city's favourite local'.
