Bad, Bad Leroy Brown 5.8

For this unconventional Brown Ale, inspiration was taken from their friends across the pond. They piled heaps of US Cascade and Amarillo hops into this brew, so you’ll enjoy each level of satisfaction, all the way to the bottom of the glass.

Tasting Notes: A beer that’s fresh, hoppy, chocolaty and not too bitter.

Berliner Weisse 3.5

Berliner Weisse is a rare German style of beer, and Black Dog is the first brewery to brew it in New Zealand.

Tasting Notes: A lower alcohol, sour, wheat beer with tart lemon and bread like flavours – think sour dough. This beer is traditionally served by adding a splash of flavoured syrup to the glass.

Bite 5.5

This is a hoppy Pilsner done in the Kiwi style. This is a representation of a style that New Zealand brewers are really crafting into something unique, a hoppy lager style beer that showcases their country’s hops.

Tasting Notes: Bite features Motueka and Nelson Sauvin hops, both of which are making a big name for themselves around the world. Kiwi hop growers can’t produce enough of these varieties so you better get a glass of this one while you can!

Blizzard 5.5

Pale, cloudy (unfiltered) and refreshing, it’s just like walking through a Blizzard.

Tasting Notes: This is a Belgian Witbier that’s easy drinking, bready, slightly sour and with the addition of Coriander seeds and Orange & Lemon peel you get those heady herbal flavours. Slice of Lemon optional.

Brewtus 5.9

Brewtus is a collaborative brew between Black Dog Brewery and Ozone Coffee. This rich, silky stout is “dry-hopped” with a hefty bag of crushed coffee beans, as well as Cascade hops for added depth of character.

Tasting Notes:

Carrot Top 7.0

This crisp winter brew is a malt-forward Amber Ale, well balanced with sturdy hop bitterness to back it up.

Tasting Notes: Instantly refreshing with a dry finish, this is a great beer for those not mad on hops – but still craving full flavour.

Chomp 4.7

It’s got a bit more in it, made to test your mettle & give you a bite. Stand up to me, drink me, snarl back at me. Made with Pacifica & Motueka hops combined with ale yeast to make grownups drool.

Tasting Notes:

Clifford 5.6

While the first batch of this brew resulted in a sweet red/brown ale, this time around Hopback was added into the mix. This has turned this Red IPA into a huge success, with its added depth, hop character and solid body.

Tasting Notes:

Golden Lab 4.8

Is a golden ale, light gold in color, with an aroma balanced with mild hop and malt characteristics. New to the family of BlackDog brews and the perfect companion on a hot day – lap it up!

Tasting Notes:

Hair of the Dog 2.2

Don’t be fooled by this breakfast ales light percentage, it’s packed full of hops! Using New Zealand Motueka, Chinook and Nelson Sauvin, this mini IPA has a pine like aroma and a fresh green hopped flavor. A very sessionable ale.

Tasting Notes:

Jazz 5.6

It’s a fruity and floral Blonde Ale, with notes of jasmine green tea from the liberal amounts we put in the fermenter – dry hopped with Black Dog’s biggest tea bag.

Tasting Notes: This is an easy drinking summer style of beer with an interesting fruity flavour twist.

Jed-I.P.A 6.2

A beer in homage to the legendary Star Wars movie franchise, calling it the Jed-IPA. This Indian pale ale was brewed on May 4 – Star Wars day. Jed-IPA is made with Amarillo hops for flavour and aroma, without excessive bitterness.

Tasting Notes:

Kiwi Unleashed 6.0

Created to replace the original Unleashed which was for the Malthouse West Coast Challenge, this beer uses a brewing technique called “hop busting’ which adds a ton of hop flavour and aroma without excessive bitterness.

Tasting Notes:

Malinois 7.0

This little Belgian style beauty, is one beer the Black Dog brewers were more than excited to brew. “Saison” – French for “Season” – is a farmhouse ale that is traditionally brewed for the farm workers.

Tasting Notes: The fruit and spice characters of this beer are produced during a warm fermentation by its characteristic yeast, in this case a new to the market Belgian style strain.

Munchen 4.7

This beer is a Malt-driven Bavarian dark lager, a style known as Munich Dunkel. The beer has plenty of lovely malt character to keep it interesting, but at the same time is very easy to drink.

Tasting Notes:

Pango Kuri 5.9

An American style stout, Pango Kuri comes from the Maori translation of “Black Dog.” This is a fitting name for a stout made with a mix of New Zealand Motueka, Pacifica and Nelson Sauvin hops, brewed with an American style in mind.

Tasting Notes: A nicely balanced brew of hops, bitterness, with chocolate and coffee notes.

Rhatas 4.6

A dark, rich bitter which is creamy and very smooth to the palate.

Tasting Notes:

Skater Hater 5.6

A hoppy, pilsner style lager brewed to showcase several varieties of New Zealand hops; with both Motueka and Nelson Sauvin making a strong appearance.

Tasting Notes:

Smoke Bomb 5.6

A German style smoked beer, called rauch bier. Made using malt from Canterbury – which has been smoked with Manuka. A deceptively pale beer, that packs a good amount of flavour.

Tasting Notes:

Special Agent 5.9

A fine hoppy IPA brewed with Nelson Sauvin hops.

Tasting Notes:

Sweet Sabine 5.8

Brewed in collaboration with German master brewer Alex Biedermann, Sweet Sabine is a smooth and easy drinking lager, crafted in a classic Vienna style.

Tasting Notes: Soft malt complexities from an elaborate 3 step mash process give way to a dry finish, with well balanced hop bitterness.

The Dogfather 6.4

They blended both American Citra & American Amarillo hops to create this well-balanced hoppy APA.

Tasting Notes: With citrus attributes from the Citra hop biting on your tongue, you will then have the balance of stone fruits sliding on through, from the Amarillo hop.

The Hops Have Eyes 8.2

Brewed for the annual West Coast IPA Challenge, this beer is packed with American Simcoe, Zythos and Amarillo.

Tasting Notes: Piney and resinous on the nose, with a hint of mango. The palate is floral with lavish grapefruit flavours, giving way to notes of bitter marmalade.
