The Blue Pits Inn, Rochdale is so named for the blue clay that was dug here when the canal was being built and the area subsequently being called Blue Pits. However, in 1875, it was renamed Castleton after nearby Castleton Moor, as the village expanded!
The Blue Pits Inn has always been considered a ghost hunters dream as, until recently, no one has been allowed to investigate it due to previous landlords.
However, we finally have access to this pub with its unusual cellars.
Down there is an old morgue complete with its original slabs. Leading from here is a bricked up tunnel which used to go from the morgue, underneath the canal, to an air raid shelter.
Also there is a derelict cottage attached, to which there is no access due to its dangerous state, but some of the brickwork has been removed from the cellar wall to enable a view into it.
The back cellar room used to be an old stable.
Another room in the cellar was the Engineers Office.
Will you join us as we investigate this old inn to find out what secrets it will reveal?
