Chequer Inn

A pub serving food with Sky TV in Steyning.

The Chequer Inn is a historic 15th Century Coaching House believed to date from around 1440. Apart from supplying aaccommodation and a change of horses for passenger or mail coaches The Chequer Inn has also acted as a Court House, Jail, Auction Room, Post Office, Cornoner's Inquest office, Trading Post and an important local meeting place. For many years The Chequer boasted a 25 foot mahogany dining table and played host to many a banquet of mutton, beef, pigeon, and pheasant.

In the 19th Century accommodation was provided in eight chambers ranging from gentlemen's rooms with curtained four-post beds to the drovers' quarters containing straw beds or palliases. Servants also lived on the premises, usually numbering around six according to the inn's documents from this time.

During this period the Chequer consisted of a Smoking Bar and a Gaming Room. Teas were also served in the more genteel Lower Saloon and cock fights were also held at the inn.

The inn today retains many of its original features, including open fires and intriguing timber-framed architecture which reflect its fascinating 500+ year history. Home-cooked food is served in the dining room, or near to the open log fire in the Saloon Bar, along with a good selection of fine wines and local and award-winning ales. A 100 year old snooker table is also available in the billiard/snooker room, and we have large screen plasma TVs in the Public Bar for popular sporting events.

All of these features combine to make a memorable visit or stay in one of the oldest and finest inns in Sussex.

Drink % Brewery
Becks Vier 4.0 Becks

Launched in April 2006 for the UK market. Brewed in Bremen, but packaged in the UK. "The Vier brand, whose German name translates as "four", is being positioned at the top end of the standard lager sector.

Tasting Notes: Beck’s Vier is a 4% pilsner lager brewed with the same uncompromising approach to quality and authenticity as Beck’s. Imported from Bremen, Germany, Beck’s Vier is brewed with precision to the Reinheitsgebot purity law, which ensures that only four pure ingredients are ever involved. This unique blend of golden barley, Bavarian hops, pure glacier water and unique yeast gives Beck’s Vier its clean, crisp, full bodied taste and exceptional refreshment.

Foster's 3.7 Heineken

Foster's is the ultimate ice-cold refreshment. Its balance of subtle fruitiness and vanilla is ideal for the sweeter-toothed lager lover. The perfect session beer to enjoy with mates.

Tasting Notes: A light-coloured lager style, it presents full malt character with a balanced clean hop bitterness. Combined with a slightly hoppy, but yeasty/malty nose, Foster's lager is a full bodied beer with excellent drinkability.

Heineken 5.0 Heineken

Brewing beer is a 100% natural process. Heineken beer is made from the purest ingredients.

Tasting Notes: The resin from the female hop flower cones is used to help balance the sweetness of the barley with a refreshing bitterness.

Hophead 3.8 Dark Star Brewing Co.

An extremely clean-drinking pale golden ale with a strong floral aroma and elderflower notes from the Cascade hops. This beer is full-bodied and full-flavoured yet gentle enough to make it a favourite session beer.

Tasting Notes:

HSB 4.8 Fuller's Brewery

A smooth, balanced English bitter

Tasting Notes: Brewed with the finest malt and hops, HSB imparts the rich, soft-fruit flavours of traditional Dundee cake. It’s a tawny, russet coloured beer, with malt and raisin on the nose – and a gentle sweetness that lingers long into the silky smooth finish.

Landlord 4.3 Timothy Taylor's Brewery

The drinkers' favourite, a 4.3% classic pale ale with a complex citrus and hoppy aroma

Tasting Notes: A strong classic ale with a golden amber colour. It has a scent of caramel, light fruits and roasted malt hints.

Stella Artois 4.8 Stella Artois

Stella Artois is one of the world’s best-selling beers and is enjoyed in more than 80 countries. Its full, characteristic flavour and high quality is assured through a superior brewing process and by using the finest ingredients available.

Tasting Notes: It is brewed to perfection using the original Stella Artois yeast and only the best ingredients including the celebrated Saaz hops. It's the optimum premium lager, with its full flavour and clean, crisp taste.
