Welcome to The Fox and Hounds

The Fox and Hounds is set in the small hamlet of Coxbench just four miles from Derby city centre. We are a traditional English pub serving hand pulled cask ales, keg beers and cider. We are also much more, with our award winning food prepared on site from fresh produce. We would like you to join us, relax and take time out, whether it's a couple of pints of our great cask ale, a glass or two of wine or a fantastic meal. We won't rush you as your time with us is important. You are not just a customer but someone we wish to share our time with and get to know.

Whether walking the picturesque Amber Valley, cycling, mountain biking or heading here again, you will always find a friendly welcome. Drink, eat and share your time, there is no need to rush, your table is never double booked and your glass will always be re-charged.

We have a bar dedicated to drinking only in the evening, where you can relax with your 'poison', read a newspaper or magazine and snack on a bag of crisps or pork scratchings without being surrounded by food, and pressurised into giving your table up by a steaming-hot steak and ale pie. Dining is divided into two levels, a lower bar area, and a mezzanine level if you want to be a little way from the bar. We don't have a pub full or TV's but we do play an eclectic mix of music from classical, soul, jazz, swing and blues to modern easy pop. You can get a pack of cards or dominoes if you want to play some traditional pub games. We have a garden patio, and seating to the front of the pub where you can watch the world go by with a drink, or some of our exceptionally good food.

Tasting Notes: Anyway, it has a fascinating aroma, with a palate of biscuit malt, spicy hops and light fruitiness. It was renamed in a staff competition back in George Peard’s day. He was the Head Brewer at the time – that’s him on the clip. Cheers George.

Fresh fillet of salmon, oven-baked in soy, mirin, lemon juice and a little fresh chilli. With warm lemon yoghurt, new potatoes and roast baby vegetables.

Beer Battered Haddock Fillet £11.75

Market fresh, crispy beer-battered haddock fillet with homemade minted mushy peas, chips and homemade tartare sauce.

Hand-raised Shortcrust Steak and Ale Pie £11.95

Our individual homemade shortcrust pie of locally reared beef and cask ale. With chips or new potatoes and seasoned and buttered vegetables.

A Bit Like Breakfast, But Not Quite £11.50

Derbyshire oat-cake stacked with our own recipe pork sausage, homemade black pudding, dry cured bacon, a brace of free-range hens eggs and chopped tomatoes.

Crispy Roasted Belly Pork £12.95

Our belly pork is slow-roasted for six hours, then re-roasted for 30 minutes, on order, which gives it our renowned crispy crackling. With caraway seed infused white cabbage, buttered mashed potatoes and rich onion gravy from the pan.

Rack of Summer Lamb £16.95

French-cut, three bone rack of Derbyshire lamb, cooked pink. Crushed minted new potatoes, pod vegetables & fragrant pink pepper-corn gravy.

Lasagne Bolognese £14.75

Made to a traditional recipe from the Emilia Region Northern Italy with the Bolognese of both beef and pork mince, Italian Pancetta, red wine and herbs, layered with homemade white sauce and ribbons of Italian made Mafalde Pasta.

Roast Breast of Quail £17.75

Our French Quail has a more intense flavour than even our corn-fed chicken but is not at all gamey. Very lightly pan-roasted for a crispy skin, with confit leg and wing, served with cherry Madeira sauce, crispy potatoes and wilted summer greens.

Corn-fed Chicken, Fresh Mango and Pancetta Salad £14.75

Pan-seared corn-fed breast of chicken, salad leaf, fresh mango, Italian Pancetta, salad vegetables and fruits. Dressed with homemade lime vinaigrette, English mint and croutons.

Summer Risotto £11.95

Our homemade risotto of Arborio Rice, white wine, garlic and vegetable stock. Dressed with summer sweet peas, baby broad beans, spicy watercress and green pesto sauce.

Warm Goat Cheese Tartlet £11.95

An individual homemade puff pastry tartlet of goats cheese and red onion jam. With fresh lime and spring onion cous cous and herb vinaigrette dressed salad fruits and vegetables.

We may have additions to today’s menu, written on the blackboard adjacent to the bar. Your waitress will be happy to tell you about them.

Our selection of British and Continental cheese, including blue vein, with savoury biscuits, salted butter, frozen grapes and apple. As an individual portion or a platter for your party to share. Limoncello and Raspberry Semifreddo £5.75

A soft frozen cream of golden caster sugar, Limoncello liqueur, double cream and crème fraîche swirled through with fresh raspberry coulis.

Chocolate Cheesecake £5.75

Our cheese cake is made from hand whipped cream cheese, sugar, vanilla caviar, 70% cocoa chocolate and double cream studded with bitter chocolate nibs and set on a biscuit crumb. However, don’t expect a ‘frozen look-e-like!

Jelly and Fruit £5.75

Not like your Gran’s 60’s and 70’s Sunday Tea though. Fresh mango jelly with fresh fruits steeped in peach liqueur and sugar stock and a pot of cold lime crème fraîche.

Pavlova £5.75

Chewy centred but crisp shell meringue, with vanilla caviar hand whipped cream, fresh summer berries and fruits.

Crème Brûlée £5.75

A true French classic. A soft set custard of eggs, sugar and cream, traditionally cooked in a Bain Marie, sealed with a crisp lid of dark caramel.

Rustic Apple and Blueberry Pie £5.75

Open top sugared shortcrust pastry case, crammed with apples and fresh blueberries, with lashings of vanilla custard.

All our puddings are made here within the four walls of the Fox and Hounds

At the Fox and Hounds our ethos is to provide truely homemade food. We never have to pass our food off as "homemade" when a butcher or factory has made it, because Tracie prepares and cooks it all within the four wall at the Fox and Hounds. To do this we source fresh produce from the best local; national; and international suppliers and cook and finish each dish as you order it. That means when you order your belly pork we re-roast it for 30 minutes, or so, to give it our renown crispy crackling, and your homemade pie has the pastry rolled, crimped on, and cooked there and then to ensure it's at its best when it reaches you.
