Gate Inn

A pub serving food in Canterbury.

The Gate Inn is a complete one-off, a wonderful little gem, and one of Kent's best kept secrets. Fine Cask Ales served direct from the barrel in the traditional tap room, and hearty freshly made food at sensible prices, make The Gate "an Oasis from the Madness of the 21st Century" both for the friendly locals, and for 'real' pub fans from far & wide.

Skirted by a stream this simple 220-year-old building has a large Public Bar with a quarry tiled floor (walkers, twitchers, welly boots & dogs welcome!), church pew seating, and an original double-sided fireplace, giving plenty of room for all to feel the benefit of the lovely log fire when it's cold or wet outside. Dominoes and cards are always freely available for all to try their hand!

The carefully restored Lounge Bar in the Old Bakery is home to the restaurant / dining area - we are happy to say that our food is very popular, so booking is recommended at all times of the week.

In the warmer months the beautiful riverside family cottage garden is filled with traditional flowers, shrubs and trees and is a joy to behold. You might also meet some of our resident free range chickens and ducks!

Alongside the excellent Cask Ales and lovely wines, the home cooked (and often locally grown) pub food is traditional, hearty, and sensibly priced. Try the famous 'Gatewich' (black pudding, bacon and mango chutney sandwich), or a giant baked potato grown in the fields near the Pub... even the crisps are locally produced!

A very relaxed fun Quiz night is held every Wednesday at 9pm with jellybeans as prizes!

Drink % Brewery
Late Red 4.5 Shepherd Neame

This easy-drinking ale is crimson copper colour, with a myriad flavour of plum, prune and raisin, plus a touch of toffee and tropical fruit, leading to a peppery, resinous hop finish.

Tasting Notes: Plum, prunes, raisins, a touch of toffee and tropical fruit are just of the flavour flourishing beneath the crimson-copper coloured cloak of this eminently easy-drinking ale. A peppery, resinous hop finish - courtesy of Kent-grown Cascade hops - adds a spice to the nutty sweetness. Rather remarkable with a roast.

Master Brew 3.7 Shepherd Neame

Master Brew is brewed using only the finest Kentish barley and hops and is Shepherd Neame's flagship beer in the brewery's Kentish heartland.

Tasting Notes: Delicate and devilishly drinkable, this quintessentially Kentish ale lays the county''s hallowed, herbaceous hops on a firm, biscuity bed of pale and crystal malt. Endowed with an inviting auburn-amber hue and a tantalising toffee-ish aroma, it''s an enlivening English ale that, given its unassuming ABV, pleasures the palate with a remarkable fullness of flavour.

Spitfire Amber 4.2 Shepherd Neame

The beer is named after the legendary Spitfire aeroplane designed by RJ Mitchell. The versatility of the aircraft and the courage of its pilots were essential to victory and were a key symbol of the spirit of that time.

Tasting Notes: An infusion of three Kentish hops adorns this beautifully balanced, blood-orange tinted British bitter with an acutely aromatic allure. Hints of marmalade, red grapes and pepper are thrust from a springboard of warm, mellow malts. The floating fruity finish signs off with a smidgen of spice and raspberry.

Whitstable Bay Pale Ale 3.9 Shepherd Neame

Whitstable Bay Pale Ale is designed to suit all palates and offer a light, refreshing taste. The sweet maltiness balances perfectly with the fresh pine notes provided by the hops added late in the process, to offer a light-coloured, thirst-quenching ale.

Tasting Notes: Refreshing, pine, fresh

Thatchers Gold Cider 4.8 Thatchers Cider

Thatchers Gold tastes as good as it looks. Using the best of our traditional approach and modern techniques for a refreshing cider with a smooth appley taste and a bright sparkle.

Tasting Notes:

Thatchers Heritage Draught Cider 4.9 Thatchers Cider

Heritage is a popular, traditional cider - it really looks and tastes like a ‘proper cider’

Tasting Notes: You’ll find its light touch and balanced flavours offer a drink that appeals to all comers. This really is a drink that reflects Thatchers expertise in crafting fine cider.
