Rat Brewery

A brewery in Huddersfield.

Since the very first brew of Lab Rat in 2011, our Brewers have created Rodent themed beers to critical acclaim. The Rat has brewed a huge range of beer styles and always experiments with varying colours, strengths and ingredients. White Rat in particular has emerged as the flagship Rat Brewery beer.
While the beer speaks for itself, the Rat artwork has been a big part of the Rat Brewery identity. Head Brewer Paul Spencer has worked with local artist Howard Hughes to produce a distinctive and diverse range of beers with quirky and often amusing rat themed names and artwork. Many of the names are thought up by the brewers themselves, but customer suggestions are always welcome!

Anthrats 4.5

Tasting Notes: A rich and robust eight-malt stout. Roast, chocolate and coffee flavours dominate. Bitterness is moderate.

Bad Rattitude 5.0

Tasting Notes: Citra Double IPA. Melanoidin, Wheat and Pale Ale malts provide a full bodied malt base to support multiple generous additions of Citra hops in this golden coloured DIPA. Added at three stages during the boil and then dry hopped during fermentation, the Citra lends an intense lemon and tropical fruit aroma and a mouthwatering astringent bitterness.

Bohemian Ratsody 4.3

Tasting Notes: 8 different hop additions. Hoppy pale ale.

Crazy Rat 6.0
Dark Ratanic Mills 9.0

Tasting Notes: A rich, smooth and vinous dark mild. Very low bitterness and residual sweetness on the palate.

Fruit Rat 4.2

Tasting Notes: A pale session fruit IPA using Cashmere and Citra hops to give citrus and tropical fruit flavours. Generous quantities of mango puree are added post-fermentation. Brewed from a New England yeast strain to enhance the tropical character. This beer will have a slight haze.

Ilkla Moor Baht' Rat

Tasting Notes: Pale Hoppy Bitter. Straw-coloured and refreshingly dry, this hoppy ale is brewed with a blend of Cascade, Wakatu and Summit hops for a spicy, savoury aroma and lasting bitterness.

Iron Rat

Tasting Notes: A pale golden IPA brewed from a combination of high alpha American hops and finished by dry-hopping with Simcoe. Fairly dry and bitter, with intense aromas of citrus, tropical fruits and pine.

King Rat 5.0

IPA A beer that is all about hops! The Nelson Sauvin variety from New Zealand give a unique "white-winey" aroma. Bitterness is high, but balanced nicely by a residual malty sweetness.

Tasting Notes: Malty, sweet

Lab Rat 4.6

The first beer ever brewed at the Rat Brewery in Huddersfield

Tasting Notes: A Hoppy Pale Ale high in bitterness and contrasted with an underlying malty sweetness, and with intense, tangy hop notes reminiscent of grapefruit.

Mother Rat 5.5

Tasting Notes: A blend of five malts and lactose sugar give this inky black stout a full-bodied, treacly sweetness and complex roasted flavours. British Admiral and Bramling Cross hops add a contrasting bitterness and spicy, grassy and berry fruit aromas. To fans of dark, flavourful beers this is like mother's milk.

Queen Rat 5

Tasting Notes: This rich, dark stout is flavoured with pure Fair Trade cocoa, spicy Atlas hops and natural Madagascan vanilla, adding bitter chocolate notes to its full-bodied malt and roast barley flavour.

Rat Against The Machine 7.0

Rat Against The Machine is an intensely hopped American style IPA that is bottled conditioned. A powerful 7% pale and bitter beer with massive citrus hop aroma derived from US Chinook & Citra hops.

Tasting Notes: Citrus

Rat Attack 3.8

Tasting Notes: Refreshing amber coloured session bitter. Four generous additions of Cascade hops result in an intense citrus hop aroma

Rat In Black 4.5

Four different malts combine to give a beer with burnt, coffee and chocolate malt character. Slightly sweet on the palate, but moderate bitterness & fruity / Spicy aroma come from English grown Bramling Cross hops.

Tasting Notes: Coffee, chocolate, sweet, fruity

Rat Poison 7.0

Tasting Notes: A lethal brew, this US craft-style Double IPA is deep golden in colour with intense citrus and resinous hop flavours from no fewer than six infusions of potent Centennial and Columbus hops. With just a hint of caramel sweetness to help mask the deadly bitterness, beware of overdose.

Ratella 4.3

Tasting Notes: Hazelnut Milk Chocolate Porter. A rich, slightly sweet porter with cocoa and hazelnut flavours and roast barley bitterness.

Ratsputin 7.4

A rich, full bodied and warming Imperial Russian Stout. Powerful 7.4% with a pungent & lingering aftertaste.

Tasting Notes:

Rattus Rattus 4.3

Tasting Notes: In this characteristically hazy wheat beer, flavours of banana & cloves are dominant thanks to the use of German wheat beer yeast. Fresh coriander gives a herbal spicy aroma which combines with German hops added at the end of the boil.

White Rat 4.0

Hoppy Pale Ale

Tasting Notes: This very pale, hoppy ale is made from low colour malt. A combination of Cascade, Columbus & Amarillo hops produce an intensely aromatic and resinous finish.
