The Wheatsheaf

A pub serving food in Chelmsford.

The Wheatsheaf is situated on the edge of the village green in Writtle. We have both a saloon bar and a public bar and are among a dying breed of traditional English pubs. By far the smallest pub in Writtle, and possibly Chelmsford, it is a great meeting place for locals from the village and those from farther afield who are made welcome in the cosy atmosphere.

We have a broad range of Real Ales which include 2 guest ales that we change on a regular basis. These will wash down the fine selection of homemade food we serve at lunchtimes Tuesday to Saturday. This winning combination has given us at The Wheatsheaf the reputation as one of the best pubs in the Chelmsford area.

We restrict music to special events which are hosted on occasion, while the main sporting event is the dominoes which is keenly contested most weekends in the Public bar.

Whether you are a local resident of Writtle or visiting the village, a visit to The Wheatsheaf is a must.

Adnams Southwold Bitter 3.4 Adnams

Southwold Bitter is a beautiful copper-coloured beer, late and dry-hopped with Fuggles for a distinctive, lingering hoppiness. Brewed with the finest East Anglian Pale Ale malt barley, sourced locally to the brewery. We use Fuggles hops which we add late in the boil to preserve the herbal flavours of this traditional English hop. We add more Fuggles to each cask so that the flavour of the hops infuses into the beer. It’s a perfect 3.7% abv in cask and 4.1% abv in bottle and can.

Carlsberg Danish Pilsner 3.4 Carlsberg Marstons Brewing Company

Completely rebrewed from head to hop, our new Carlsberg Danish Pilsner has a light and refreshing qualities with a smooth, full mouthfeel and a perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness. Distinctive citrus hop aromas deliver a greater depth of flavour and a hoppy, moreish aftertaste to the final sip. Skål!

Tasting Notes:

Foster's 3.4 Heineken

Foster's is the ultimate ice-cold refreshment. Its balance of subtle fruitiness and vanilla is ideal for the sweeter-toothed lager lover. The perfect session beer to enjoy with mates.

Tasting Notes: A light-coloured lager style, it presents full malt character with a balanced clean hop bitterness. Combined with a slightly hoppy, but yeasty/malty nose, Foster's lager is a full bodied beer with excellent drinkability.
