Thomas Sheraton originally worked as a cabinet-maker, but soon became more interested in design than construction. Sheraton believed in simplicity of design combined with delicacy of decoration. He was particularly interested in smaller pieces of furniture, and a great deal of his skill was devoted to designing occasional tables. While in London, he also taught various aspects of his craft. Sheraton was a devout Baptist and, after being ordained a minister, he returned to Stockton in the early 1800s to lead its Baptist congregation.
