Tudor Rose

A pub serving food in Upnor.

Set right next to Upnor Castle overlooking the River Medway and St Mary’s Island, the Tudor Rose celebrates all things nautical.
It’s thought to have been built soon after the Dutch invasion along the Medway in 1667 and these days is adorned with colourful murals of Lord Nelson and his flagship HMS Victory in the main bar. A second bar recreates the interior of a former Medway tug vessel, named the Kent.
Tudor Rose has a full selection of to six Shepherd Neame ales at any time and the house won a Master of Beer award in 2008.
Home made dishes, using local sourced ingredients, feature strongly on the menu which offers not only traditional pub food but special nights for Italian, Indian and Mexican recipes. Up to 45 people can sit down for a meal in the two bars.
For music lovers, folk, country and blues duos and trios make monthly appearances for live nights.

Amber Ale 4.5 Shepherd Neame

A golden-brown ale with a fruity aroma and a full, malty palate, Amber Ale derives its unique signature from the special marriage of fruity, fragrant hops with Pale, Crystal and Brown malts, making it a classic beer to savour and enjoy.

Tasting Notes:

Asahi Super Dry 5.0 Shepherd Neame

Clean and crisp with a restrained bitterness and a subtle citrus aroma, this light golden beer was Japan's first "dry" lager.

Tasting Notes: Its deft, distinct dryness comes from a carefully concise fermentation period, a minimum four week maturation period and the traditional addition of a small amount of rice. Fresh and with plenty of balanced finesse, it's an ideal accompaniment to the well-defined flavours and textures found in sushi.

Dragonfire 4.5 Shepherd Neame

Brewed to commemorate St George's Day, Dragonfire is a celebration of the best that England has to offer.

Tasting Notes: The cream of the crop of malted barley, oats, rye and wheat with goldings hops adding a classic bitterness. Full bodied and rich with a mellow mahogany hue, it is the ideal to England's Patron Saint."

Hürlimann Sternbräu 4.8 Shepherd Neame

Hailed as the first lager to be brewed in Kent, this bracing, brusque Swiss beer had its revered recipe enhanced and improved in 2009.

Tasting Notes: Better balanced and more rounded, lime, rose and pears nestle in the nose while on the palate there''s taut graininess, tart grapefruit and a full floral flourish.

Kents Best 4.1 Shepherd Neame

An ambient bitter, which successfully merges the biscuity sweetness of English malt with the fruity, floral bitterness of locally grown hops from the Kent countryside, to give a clean, satisfying and moreish drink to quaff, effortlessly, among friends.

Tasting Notes: Fruity, floral

Late Red 4.5 Shepherd Neame

This easy-drinking ale is crimson copper colour, with a myriad flavour of plum, prune and raisin, plus a touch of toffee and tropical fruit, leading to a peppery, resinous hop finish.

Tasting Notes: Plum, prunes, raisins, a touch of toffee and tropical fruit are just of the flavour flourishing beneath the crimson-copper coloured cloak of this eminently easy-drinking ale. A peppery, resinous hop finish - courtesy of Kent-grown Cascade hops - adds a spice to the nutty sweetness. Rather remarkable with a roast.

Master Brew 3.7 Shepherd Neame

Master Brew is brewed using only the finest Kentish barley and hops and is Shepherd Neame's flagship beer in the brewery's Kentish heartland.

Tasting Notes: Delicate and devilishly drinkable, this quintessentially Kentish ale lays the county''s hallowed, herbaceous hops on a firm, biscuity bed of pale and crystal malt. Endowed with an inviting auburn-amber hue and a tantalising toffee-ish aroma, it''s an enlivening English ale that, given its unassuming ABV, pleasures the palate with a remarkable fullness of flavour.

Oranjeboom 3.9 Shepherd Neame

A delicious, easy-drinking Dutch drop with a hay-like hue and a herbaceous, grassy and fruity fragrance. Citrus notes on the palate speak softly of orange, kiwi and lemongrass buttressed with a hint of caramel sweetness and a gentle, drifting finish.

Tasting Notes: Fruity, citrus, caramel

Samuel Adams Boston Lager 4.8 Shepherd Neame

Since 1984, Samuel Adams Boston Lager has used only the finest hand-selected ingredients to create this perfectly balanced, complex and full-bodied original brew.

Tasting Notes: Brewed with only the finest ingredients including Bavarian Noble hops and traditional brewing methods, Samuel Adams Boston Lager is full-flavoured and balanced. The balance of malty sweetness contrasted by hop spiciness and followed by the robust, smooth finish sets the standard for all Samuel Adams beers

Spooks Ale 4.7 Shepherd Neame

Spooks Ale is a devilishly great beer.

Tasting Notes: It is characterised by a distinct, biscuity palate, derived from blending three traditional roasted barley malts in the mash. These complex, malty flavours are wonderfully balanced by a citrusy, hoppy bitterness and an aroma from an especially fruity hop which is added at four different stages during brewing.

Strong Pale Ale 5.6 Shepherd Neame

Historically this recipe was formulated with 100% pale malt and was bittered by the brewery’s signature East Kent Goldings hops

Tasting Notes: This results in a golden, brilliantly bright, hoppy ale which has risen Phoenix-like from the ashes of time for the modern drinker to enjoy.

Whitstable Bay Pale Ale 3.9 Shepherd Neame

Whitstable Bay Pale Ale is designed to suit all palates and offer a light, refreshing taste. The sweet maltiness balances perfectly with the fresh pine notes provided by the hops added late in the process, to offer a light-coloured, thirst-quenching ale.

Tasting Notes: Refreshing, pine, fresh
