The Hand & Crown stands in the village of High Wych, which first became a breeding ground for falcons during the middle ages. It was here that the sport reached its zenith in the Elizabethan period, when noblemen from Hatfield House and Audley End used to ride out to the village for a days' sport in the grounds of a loacal farmhouse. The house stood on the site of the present Hand & Crown and its occupier was a tenant of the Norman family of Madeville.
