Bowling Green

A pub in Douglas.

Built in 1873, the Bowling Green pub is steeped in history. Rumour has it that the licence application was originally declined as it was thought that such a venue would attract the 'rowdy element' and that it would be off-putting for the ladies walking up and down Derby Road. The licence was, however, eventually approved and over the years this pub has boasted a bowling green (hence the name) as well as a roller skating rink and a massive function room that was apparently the go-to entertainment venue in the Island during the 60s.

While not quite matching up to its 'glory days', there is no denying that this is still an amazing building with an inviting atmosphere. Very popular with tradesmen enjoying a teatime drink and those who recognise a good locals' pub when they see it. Inside there's plenty of space and period features as well as the usual pub games while outside there's comfortable covered smoking area. This pub is definitely worth a visit.
