The Sportsman

A pub serving food in Whistable.

The Sportsman has held a Michelin star since 2007, and serves high quality food in a low-key, cosy pub environment.

Owned by Shepherd Neame, it is run by brothers Phil and Stephen Harris. Stephen is also head chef, and uses truly local ingredients, from vegetables grown behind the pub, for meat from the farm next door. He takes advantage of the pub’s beautiful seaside location by offering dishes such as Whitstable native oysters and slip sole grilled in seaweed butter, and making sea salt from seawater

Drink % Brewery
Asahi 5.0 Asahi

Light straw color with a large foamy white head. The aroma has rice, grassy hops, and grain.

Tasting Notes: Clean and crisp with a restrained bitterness and a subtle citrus aroma, this light golden beer was Japan''''s first "dry" lager. Its deft, distinct dryness comes from a carefully concise fermentation period, a minimum four week maturation period and the traditional addition of a small amount of rice. Fresh and with plenty of balanced finesse, it''''s an ideal accompaniment to the well-defined flavours and textures found in sushi.

Early Bird 4.3 Shepherd Neame

A fabulously refreshing, bracing beer that hails early maturing Goldings hops in style.

Tasting Notes: Alive and open with a golden glint in its eye, it stirs up spring sensations of blossom, honey, freshly cut grass and plenty of pine on the nose. The gentle bitterness, soothed by an undercurrent of light biscuit malt, delivers a dry finish. Superb with salads and whitebait.

Master Brew 3.7 Shepherd Neame

Master Brew is brewed using only the finest Kentish barley and hops and is Shepherd Neame's flagship beer in the brewery's Kentish heartland.

Tasting Notes: Delicate and devilishly drinkable, this quintessentially Kentish ale lays the county''s hallowed, herbaceous hops on a firm, biscuity bed of pale and crystal malt. Endowed with an inviting auburn-amber hue and a tantalising toffee-ish aroma, it''s an enlivening English ale that, given its unassuming ABV, pleasures the palate with a remarkable fullness of flavour.

Oyster Stout 4.5 Marstons

English Aroma Hops, Fuggles and Goldings are added for their fruity, floral and spicy contribution to the taste with the majority of the bitterness coming from the roasted malts. The final result is a rich, dark and exceptionally creamy smooth stout.

Tasting Notes:

Whitstable Bay Pale Ale 3.9 Shepherd Neame

Whitstable Bay Pale Ale is designed to suit all palates and offer a light, refreshing taste. The sweet maltiness balances perfectly with the fresh pine notes provided by the hops added late in the process, to offer a light-coloured, thirst-quenching ale.

Tasting Notes: Refreshing, pine, fresh

Thatchers Gold Cider 4.8 Thatchers Cider

Thatchers Gold tastes as good as it looks. Using the best of our traditional approach and modern techniques for a refreshing cider with a smooth appley taste and a bright sparkle.
