Since Merton Road was laid out in 1849, the area surrounding this pub has changed beyond recognition. The road was first paved in 1862, then lined with villas. Two of the villas were combined in the early 1930s to form the Merton Hotel. Like many other thoroughfares in Bootle, Merton Road was named after a college at Oxford University. Merton College, Oxford, was founded in 1264 by Walter de Merton 'sometime Chancellor of England'.
