The Hogs Head Inn

A dog friendly pub serving food and a garden in Alnwick.

The medieval market town of Alnwick in England's most northerly county, Northumberland, is home to the world-class attractions of Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden.

Alnwick Castle played a starring role as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films. There is plenty at the castle to entertain muggles young and old alike. Wannabe wizards can take part in broomstick training on the very spot of Harry’s first lesson in the film production of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, or join an entertaining costumed guide for behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the days of filming.

A short drive east takes you to the Northumberland coast, where you can walk for miles without seeing a soul. Visit the romantic ruins of castles like Dunstanburgh which juts above the coastline, or take in the impressive grandeur of Bamburgh Castle which is open all year around.

Head inland from Alnwick and take in jaw-droppinp views of Northumberland's hauntingly beautiful Simonside Hills. Keep an eye out for mythical fairy-folk called Duergar who are are said to roam these hills. But one thing you're guaranteed sure to see are the mystical markings carved into the rock face at nearby Lordenshaws. Enjoy a visit to Cragside, the 19th century mansion home of Lord William Armstrong, who was known as the magician of the north for his industrial genius and inventions.

Minutes from the A1, the popular AA three-star rated inn The Hog's Head Inn stands on the edge of Alnwick. Named after the tavern in J K Rowling's Harry Potter books, The inn continues Alnwick's connection with this famous boy wizard. It's a friendly, modern pub with a great selection of home cooked food on offer, real ales and also has good value bed and breakfast options.
