The historic town of Deal has ancient roots but a distinctly Georgian feel with wonderful architecture, a blustery promenade and nostalgic pier, two castles, museums and many independent shops. The pub was built in the early 19th century but the name is one of the oldest around, originating from the late 12th century as veterans returned from the crusades. Early pub signs showed a crusader knight holding the head of an ‘infidel’ Turk but these were replaced in later times with a more noble portrait of a Turk in recognition of their fighting bravery.
